Touchscreen Not Working? Dead or Possessed

Nine sections sort a broken Android touchscreen into dead, zoned or possessed, then give each fault its own test. Tested on a Tecno Spark 40.

This page is for anyone whose screen has stopped answering, or has started answering on its own, and who needs to know which of those two problems they are actually looking at. By the end you should be able to say which of three classes the phone belongs in, using free tests already on the handset, and stop paying for repairs aimed at the wrong problem.

Scope is narrow on purpose. Repair prices, protector rankings and backup app recommendations have their own guides and are not repeated here, and nothing in this post is worth installing. Sections 4 and 5 hand you a test and explain what the result means. They stop there, because the hardware cases were prescribed from reasoning rather than from a broken phone on the bench.

1. The 30 second split: dead, zoned, or possessed

Place your fault in one row before trying any fix. Dead panels and phantom taps need opposite steps.

What you seeFault classGo to
Nothing responds anywhere, buttons may still workDead everywhere, likely software or connectionSection 2 and 3
Same strip, corner or patch never respondsDead zone, likely digitizer damageSection 4
Apps open, letters type, calls start with no touch from youGhost touch, likely input noiseSection 5

If touch failed right after a system update, read the update post first, then return here if it persists. This post fixes touch. That post fixes update fallout. For the wider Android fix order, see Android Problems Fix.

2. The sensitivity toggle fails both ways

This is the only setting that causes both opposite symptoms, so check it first. Too low, or a thick protector on top of a low setting, gives dead taps. Accidentally set to max gives phantom taps. Every guide treats it as one direction. It is both.

Setting stateWhat you feelFix
Sensitivity low or off, protector onTaps need repeats, edges missTurn sensitivity up one step and retest
Sensitivity correct, protector thick or liftedDead spots near edges, bubbles trap touchRemove protector as a test, see Section 3
Sensitivity maxed or glove mode left onRandom taps, scroll jumps, pocket dialsTurn sensitivity down, turn glove mode off

On the Tecno Spark 40, open Settings and use the search box at the top. Search for Touch sensitivity, Glove mode, or Accidental touch protection. Skins move menus between builds, so search instead of following a memorised path. Samsung documents the same toggle in its support troubleshooter dated 21 Aug 2026. Xiaomi documents the failure mode in its own FAQ: a phone that entered a highly sensitive mode with no hardware problem.

If the toggle looks normal, move on. It rules out the cheapest cause in 30 seconds.

Protector choice lives elsewhere. A future screen protector guide will rank protectors when it publishes. Until then, use removal as a test, not a purchase.

3. The five minute software ladder

Work in order. Stop when touch returns.

  1. Force reboot. Hold Power + Volume Down for 10 to 20 seconds until it restarts. This resets the touch controller. This is the same path the pillar uses.
  2. Remove the protector as a test. Power off, peel it off, test with clean dry fingers. Google lists this as step one in support answer 7666942.
  3. Check TalkBack. This is the trap. With TalkBack on, one tap only selects and double tap activates. The phone looks dead but it only changed the gesture map. Go to Settings → Accessibility → TalkBack and turn it off (Samsung troubleshooter check).
  4. Reset timing aids. In Settings → Accessibility, set Touch and hold delay to Short or Default and turn the magnification shortcut off.
  5. Rule out an app. Boot to Safe Mode and test for 10 minutes. If it holds, a third party app is the cause. Uninstall newest first. If you suspect malware, use How to Stop Malware From Destroying Your Phone. That post is the full procedure.
  6. Update, then stop. Check Settings → System → System update and install what is offered. If the phone lags on every tap from full storage, that is storage, not touch. Use Android Storage Full After Deleting Files.

Do not factory reset from this section. Read the FAQ at the end first. A reset fixes software mapping faults only. It never fixes a dead digitizer zone.

4. Dead zones: prove it free, then price it

A fixed strip, corner or patch that never answers, in every app, after a reboot with no protector, is hardware until proven otherwise.

The drag test. Open Quick Settings fully expanded. Press and hold any toggle icon and drag it slowly corner to corner, then down each edge and across the middle. Watch where it drops. Repeat twice. Same drop spot means dead spot. This is Google's method from support answer 7666942. It needs no install. A Play test app only draws the same map with ads.

The button test. On some phones the code *#0*# opens a hardware test menu with a touch paint screen. See Samsung Secret Codes Test Phone for where that code works. If your phone opens it, draw across the screen. Gaps that repeat are dead zones. If it does not open, the drag test is enough.

Same spot twice means digitizer. That is the clear layer under the glass that reads your finger. A crack or hard drop kills it in zones. No setting, app or reboot regrows it. Back up, then book a repair.

Repair pricing lives in a future repair costs guide for Nigeria. That post will carry the price list when it publishes. Until then, get two written quotes and ask if the quote covers digitizer plus glass as one unit.

5. Ghost touch: unplug the charger first

Ghost touch has an order. Follow it. Charger first, moisture second, protector third, heat fourth, hardware last. Any guide that puts factory reset before the charger swap has failed you.

Step30 second testWhy it works
Charger and cableUnplug. Test 2 minutes on battery. Then try a different known good charger and cableCheap chargers leak electrical noise that the capacitive layer reads as fingers. Credit to Android Police, 19 Sept 2024, for the mechanism
Moisture and sweatPower off. Dry screen and hands fully. Remove wet case. Retest dryWater drops conduct. The layer cannot tell a drop from a finger. Samsung and Pixel help threads both confirm this pattern
Protector and caseRemove protector. Remove tight case. Retest bareTrapped debris, bubbles and case pressure create false contacts. A December 2025 repair shop writeup documents bubbles and lifted edges as the mechanism
HeatCool the phone in shade for 15 minutes with screen off. Retest coolHeat shifts sensor readings. If heat came with swelling, stop and read the safety note below
HardwareIf ghosts persist bare and dry in Safe Mode, it is hardware.Controller or digitizer fault. Back up, then book a repair

Safety stop: a lifting screen or a back that no longer sits flat is a possible swollen battery. Do not press it flat. Do not charge overnight. Power down and take it to a service centre the same day. Credit to cashify for listing this correctly in its September 2026 ghost guide.

If moisture got inside and ghosts survive full drying, that is water damage. Use How to Save Your Phone From Water Damage. If ghosts only appear when the phone is hot to hold, that is thermal. Use Android Phone Overheating.

6. A note on the calibration menu and the repair app

The calibration menu is dead. A regional service page, carlcare.com/ng/tips-detail/unresponsive-touch-screen/, dated 31 May 2023, by Jide Mbaka, states under cause 5 Calibration Issues: Most Android devices have a calibration option in the settings. It then gives the path Settings → Language and keyboard → Touch Input → Text Input, and under Finger touch precision tap Calibration tool or Reset calibration, plus a Touchscreen Calibration app walkthrough as fallback.

That path is from October 2011. An AndroidCentral forum thread from October 2011 gives the same route. It shipped with Android 4.0. A reader following it on a modern phone hunts a screen that does not exist. Lifewire confirmed the removal on 6 Feb 2024: Recent versions of Android removed the calibration feature, as modern screens rarely need it. A sibling page from the same service brand dated November 2022 repeats the same route. Two pages, same obsolete menu.

There is no replacement calibration method on modern Android. What people call misregistration today is protector, sensitivity toggle, moisture or damage. Check those four.

The repair app is a test in a repair costume. A Play store Touchscreen Repair app with hundreds of thousands of ratings claims to repair touch by reducing response time. An app cannot repair a digitizer. One AppBrain reviewer put it plainly: did absolutely nothing. Use the free drag test in Section 4 instead.

7. Dead screen, live phone: the OTG recovery

Screen fully dead but the phone vibrates, rings or shows lights. Do not send it to a shop with no copy of your data elsewhere.

If the phone supports USB OTG, plug in a USB mouse with a USB OTG adapter. The cursor appears. Enter PIN, open Settings → System → Backup or your backup app, and run a full backup to your Google account. Copy photos, WhatsApp backup and contacts first. A Carlcare Kenya help page documents this OTG mouse method. Credit there.

Then power off and book the repair with the backup done. A future backup apps guide will rank backup tools when it publishes. Until then, the built in Google backup plus a manual photo copy is enough for a screen job.

8. What I tested on a Tecno Spark 40 and what I could not reproduce

Test unit: Tecno Spark 40, Nigeria, September 2026. Full method sits on How We Test.

What I checked: Settings search for Touch sensitivity, Glove mode, TalkBack and magnification. Force reboot. Protector removal test. Quick Settings drag test twice. Touch on battery alone, then with two chargers. Wired mouse through an OTG adapter.

What I found: sensitivity search surfaced the toggle. TalkBack off plus protector removal plus reboot resolved the simulated dead feel cases. Charger swap made no difference on this healthy unit, which is the expected result. Drag test drew clean.

What I could not reproduce: a true dead zone and true ghost touch. Both need damage, moisture, noisy power or heat that I did not inflict on the phone. So Sections 4 and 5 prescribe tests, not claimed fixes. For the general fix order, see Android Problems Fix.

9. Questions readers ask

My screen taps by itself. Am I hacked?

Almost never. Ghost touch is input noise from charger, moisture, protector, heat or damage. Unplug the charger and dry the screen first. Hacking does not type random letters in Notes. If ghosts persist bare and dry in Safe Mode, it is hardware.

Can an app fix my touchscreen?

No. An app can draw a touch map so you see the dead zone. It cannot regrow a digitizer or shield noise. Use the built in drag test in Section 4. Save your storage and your time.

Why does touch fail only while charging?

The charger or cable is leaking electrical noise. Test 2 minutes on battery alone. If ghosts stop off charger, replace that charger and cable with a known good set. Do not keep using a charger that causes phantom taps.

Touch works but feels slow. Is that the same fault?

No. Delay is timing, not dead sensing. Check Touch and hold delay and magnification shortcut in Settings → Accessibility first. If the whole phone lags, treat it as performance or storage, not touch.

Does a factory reset fix touch problems?

Only software mapping faults: a bad app, a bad TalkBack or accessibility setting, or corrupt touch config after an update. It never fixes a dead zone, a cracked digitizer, charger noise, moisture or a bad protector. Run Sections 2 to 5 first. Reset is last, with a backup done.

The top half of my touch is off by half an inch. Is that calibration?

No. Modern Android has no user calibration screen. Offset in one area is protector misfit, edge pressure from a case, or digitizer damage after a drop. Remove protector and case and retest bare. If the offset stays in the same place, book a repair.
