Best Free VPN for Android: 2 Worth It, 3 Conditional (2026)

Two free tiers are worth the space on a Nigerian phone, three more come with strings attached, and the app a 2025 research paper counts above 100 million Play downloads is the one I steer people away from.

I get asked which is the best free VPN for Android to install as often as I get asked which antivirus to buy. Two free tiers are worth the space, and three more come with caveats. The app a 2025 paper counts above 100 million Play downloads is the one I steer people away from. My test phone is a Tecno Spark 40 on HiOS and Android 15, so every figure is checked against a bundle that costs real money.

This guide tiers the free field and converts every cap into megabytes and naira. The guide prices those caps on a Nigerian carrier's published prices, and it names the app family I warn people away from.

Which free VPN is worth installing? The quick summary

  • Two tiers earn it: Proton VPN Free has no data cap, and Windscribe Free has 10 GB with a confirmed email.
  • PrivadoVPN and Hotspot Shield are conditional, because each contradicts its own page, and hide.me is conditional because a lab disagrees with its own terms.
  • Turbo VPN is warned off, because a 2025 paper places it inside a named provider family.
  • 10 GB is worth ₦4,500 on MTN's own monthly bundle, so a cap is a price tag.

The tier stack: what is worth it, what is conditional, what to leave alone

The free field splits into three honest groups, and most ranking pages flatten them with an upsell per row. Every tier comes from a vendor's own terms.

The appTierThe cap, per the vendorThe catch
Proton VPN FreeWorth itNo data cap, no throttlingOne device, no P2P, no server choice
Windscribe FreeWorth it10 GB with email, 2 GB withoutTen countries, one hard cap
PrivadoVPN FreeConditional10 GB, then throttledIts page contradicts itself on speeds and devices
hide.me FreeConditionalUnlimited dataOne device, eight locations
Hotspot Shield BasicConditionalUnlimited dataOne country, ads, 2 Mbps mobile
Turbo VPNWarned off500 MB a dayAds, no working kill switch on free, a named research family
Opera Free VPNScope noteNo caps at allThree locations, browser only
Caps and catches come from the vendor's own page where one exists, and from a named lab otherwise.

Disclosure before the first pick: this page links to the paid tier of one app it reviews. The picks here are not ranked by what pays. Every free-tier claim is quoted from the vendor's own page, and every lab figure is credited to its desk.

Proton VPN Free: the unlimited one, with the asterisks attached

Proton publishes the strongest free-tier language anywhere. Its bandwidth page opens with "No". The page continues, "All Proton VPN users, even those on our Free plan(new window), have unlimited bandwidth and data". Its speed page adds that Proton has "no bandwidth limits or bandwidth throttles, even for free users."

Proton's server page lists ten free locations, namely the Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland, Norway, Switzerland, Singapore, Mexico, Canada, and the United States. I read that list on 8 October 2026.

You do not choose where you land. Proton states "We will randomly choose your next server". The same page adds that the "cooldown period starts at 45 seconds for the first change, followed by 10-minute intervals for additional changes". TechRadar's table puts this tier at one device connection and no P2P.

Speed is the honest asterisk, and Proton publishes the reason: "Many Plus servers are on 10 Gbps networks". The vendor also asks readers not to "use servers that are under a heavy load". TechRadar measured this tier at 335 Mbps, a bench figure this page cites rather than repeats.

The decision behind the pick sits one post earlier. My VPN decision guide ran the two-situation test and named no app.

Windscribe Free: the choice one, and a cap that is real

Windscribe states the deal in one sentence on its free tier page: "Give us an email and get 10 GB a month". The page adds, "or don't and get 2 GB". It goes on, "Either way, it's 10 country servers, unlimited devices on one account, and no card unless you want to". Its pricing article adds that unsubscribing from promotional emails also drops a user to 2 GB.

The confirmation email is the whole difference, so a reader who skips it halves the tier. Windscribe's feature table marks throttling as "Never" across all three tiers.

TechRadar's table gives Windscribe Free a "Data Cap" of 15 GB, and its card repeats "Data limit: 15 GB". Two Windscribe pages dated January and May 2026 say 10 GB. This guide uses 10 GB, because the vendor's own pages bound the product, and the 5 GB gap stays logged.

What a data cap actually costs in naira

A cap means nothing without a price, so the arithmetic below reads MTN Nigeria's own published data plans, fetched on 8 October 2026. The page lists a monthly plan of 10 GB plus 10 minutes, marked "Valid for 30 days" and priced "Only ₦ 4,500".

That gives one division a reader can check: ₦4,500 divided by 10,000 MB is ₦0.45 per MB. The convention is 1 GB to 1,000 MB. The page prints "Rate: ₦0.35/MB" beside that same row. I divided every plan's price by its own allowance. On more than four rows in five, the printed rate comes out lower.

MTN prices a weekly 500 MB plan at ₦500, which is ₦1.00 per MB, while the printed rate says ₦0.31.

The tierMegabytes₦0.45 per MB (₦4,500 / 10 GB)₦0.70 per MB (₦350 / 500 MB)₦0.16 per MB (₦125,000 / 800 GB)
Windscribe Free, email confirmed10,000₦4,500₦7,000₦1,600
Windscribe Free, no email2,000₦900₦1,400₦320
Windscribe after the X post bonus15,000₦6,750₦10,500₦2,400
Turbo VPN at 500 MB a day, thirty days15,000₦6,750₦10,500₦2,400
Proton VPN FreeNo capBounded by the bundleBounded by the bundleBounded by the bundle
Each figure is the megabytes multiplied by a computed rate, on a convention of 1 GB to 1,000 MB.

Windscribe's free 10 GB is exactly one MTN monthly bundle, so the cap and the bundle expire together. That holds only if every megabyte goes through the tunnel. Split tunnelling breaks that, because the bundle drains for apps outside the tunnel while the cap never binds.

Opera Mini publishes its own free data grants for Nigeria, listing "Operator: MTN, Airtel", "Daily free data: 50MB", and "Monthly free data: 1.5GB". Dividing 10,000 MB by that daily 50 MB gives 200 days, and 10 GB divided by the 1.5 GB grant gives about 6.7 months. My Android data draining guide shows where the bundle went.

The conditional three, and where their own pages disagree

PrivadoVPN's free page contradicts itself. It promises "10GB Unlimited Speeds: Every month you get unlimited data and 10GB of uncapped speeds". Two bullets later the same page promises "Blazing-Fast Speeds: Get access to limited speeds on our free plan". The same page claims "we never limit your device connections or throttle your speeds".

The labs read it three ways. TechRadar's table puts this tier at one device connection. Its review reports speed "throttled to between 2 - 4 Mbps each time we connected" after the cap. PCWorld reads thirteen global servers and ten simultaneous device connections. Three device counts keep this tier conditional.

hide.me is the honest one. Its page states "If you're using the free service, you get to connect to a choice of 8 server locations". The same page says, "Our free VPN service allows you to connect one device at a time", and promises "No Ads - Free is Free". TechRadar's table shows seven server countries and adverts on mobile apps.

Hotspot Shield Basic carries the widest spread. Its own page says "We're ad supported, giving you total privacy with no charges" and points free users at "our US-based servers". security.org crowns it "Best Free VPN Overall" at 8.9 out of 10. The same page lists "1 (free version) 85 (paid version)" countries and ads "Only on mobile". TechRadar's table shows three server countries and unlimited data. PCWorld reads it as "only U.S.-based servers and a few ads", with "A daily limit of 500MB and 2Mbps capped speeds".

The warned-off tier, and the trial that is not free

The evidence against Turbo VPN is academic rather than anecdotal. A 2025 paper from FOCI titled "Hidden Links: Analyzing Secret Families of VPN Apps" reports what its authors found. The authors "identify and analyze three families of VPN providers", whose "download counts on the Google Play Store exceed 700 million". The paper was published in Free and Open Communications on the Internet.

Table 1 of the paper lists "Innovative Connecting | Turbo VPN | 100,000,000+" and "Innovative Connecting | Turbo VPN Lite | 50,000,000+". The paper notes the family "has been previously scrutinized by two research efforts linking them to the People's Liberation Army". Its authors report that the linked providers "share VPN servers' cryptographic credentials, including Shadowsocks passwords that are hard-coded into their APKs".

vpnMentor's Turbo review states that the app "only has 7 locations, and it limits you to 500MB of data per day". The same review reports that "the server in Dublin leaked my real IP address". The same review adds that "the kill switch doesn't work with the free version (you have to upgrade)". It also reports that "Turbo VPN's policies haven't undergone an independent audit".

One desk disagrees, and the disagreement is the point. SafetyDetectives calls Turbo VPN "a decent VPN for beginners who are looking for basic protection". The same page carries the note "Editor's Note: ExpressVPN and this site are in the same ownership group". Popularity does the rest, and an app the paper counts above 100 million Play downloads is a distribution fact rather than a safety verdict. This verdict names a structure, an audit gap, and a leak test.

A money-back window is not a free tier. PCWorld, a tier-1 desk, runs a fifth pick headed "Best free trial" for AVG Secure with the bullet "Free 60-day trial". A refund window is a paid product with a card on file and a clock running.

naija-vpn.com warns that APKs "from APKPure, Telegram channels, or WhatsApp groups claiming 'free NordVPN' or 'cracked Surfshark' are almost always modified to inject adware". The same site adds that they "steal passwords, or sell your traffic". A reader who installed something bad needs my malware removal guide, and the scanner question is graded in my antivirus guide.

Five labs, five crowns, and vendors who disagree with them

Five desks crowned three different apps. top10vpn.com examined 150 free VPNs and recommended seven, with Proton VPN first. TechRadar crowned PrivadoVPN Free, and RTINGS.com and PCWorld both crowned Proton VPN Free. security.org crowned Hotspot Shield Basic at 8.9 out of 10. My method and the hardware it runs on are set out in how we test, and no speed figure here is mine.

Nigeria notes: data, bans, and the banking line

Nigeria is where the arithmetic above bites, because a cap here is priced in naira. The ₦4,500 monthly row is MTN's own, and the page prices a 250 GB monthly plan at ₦55,000.

The law is the calm part. My earlier guide records that "Nigeria has no law against VPN use, but bookmakers can punish it under their own terms". A betting account is the one place I never tunnel, and banking sessions are the reason a reader with a small bundle bothers at all.

When to pay instead, and what the money buys

Three triggers end a free tier. Streaming is the first, because TechRadar's table shows Proton VPN Free failing to unblock streaming while Windscribe Free passes. Country choice is the second, because Proton gives ten locations and no say in which you land. Device count is the third, because Proton Free holds one connection.

Both pivots are priced in public. Proton VPN Plus buys server choice, torrenting, and the larger Plus network. Windscribe's Build-A-Plan starts at a $3 minimum with each location at $1 a month. Windscribe Pro lists at $9 a month or $69 a year.

The decision behind the install sits one post back in my VPN decision guide.

Questions readers ask

Is Proton VPN Free really unlimited?

Yes, on the vendor's own terms. Its bandwidth page states that all users "have unlimited bandwidth and data". Its speed page adds there are "no bandwidth limits or bandwidth throttles, even for free users."

Is Windscribe Free 10 GB or 15 GB?

Windscribe's own pages say 10 GB, and TechRadar's table says 15 GB. This guide uses 10 GB and logs the 5 GB gap.

What does 10 GB buy me in Nigeria?

Ten thousand megabytes, which is ₦4,500 on MTN's own monthly bundle. It is ₦7,000 on its 500 MB daily plan, and about ₦1,600 on its yearly 800 GB plan.

Everyone uses Turbo VPN, so is it actually bad?

Popularity is a distribution fact. The 2025 FOCI paper places Turbo VPN inside the Innovative Connecting family, and a published leak test found a real IP address.

What to do next

Install one of the two worth-it tiers, confirm the email if you chose Windscribe, and read the data counter on day one. My Android problems hub collects the rest of the troubleshooting set.
