NordVPN vs Surfshark for Android: Honest Comparison (2026)

Same owner since 2022, different bets: NordVPN for speed and audits, Surfshark for price and devices. Renewals, not intros, decide value. Naira math included.

The verdict first

NordVPN vs Surfshark Android: same owner since 2022. NordVPN wins on speed and audit depth. Surfshark wins on price and device count. Renewals, not intros, decide value. Read the trap box before you buy. I test on a Tecno Spark 40 running HiOS with Android 15.

Same owner since 2022

NordVPN and Surfshark share one owner. Nord Security and Surfshark merged in February 2022. PR Newswire reported the merger on 2 February 2022. I read that release on 24 October 2026.

Both brands run independent ops. Separate apps. Separate audits. Separate price pages. No single brand owns the other.

The merger matters for trust. A reader should not pick a side in a tribal duel. Both wires compete on product. I discount tribalism and compare what each app actually does.

Kape Technologies owns vpnMentor. vpnMentor ranks both brands and discloses that tie. I note the same structural fact here: one owner, two products, no reason to cheer for either.

Speed: lab over bench

Independent labs beat vendor blogs. CNET ran a hands-on lab test. Nord lost 3 percent of base speed. Surfshark lost 21 percent. Source: CNET, nordvpn-vs-surfshark, published 18 September 2025, read 24 October 2026.

Cyberinsider ran a 903-Mbps bench. Nord held the edge. Source: cyberinsider 12-test duel, read 24 October 2026.

Surfshark's own blog claims over 1,600 Mbps against Nord's more than 1,250 Mbps. That is a vendor self-report with no methodology shown. I do not adopt it as a result. Labs over blogs.

CNET noted Africa and Middle East server coverage. That matters for travel. Source: CNET, 18 September 2025, read 24 October 2026.

Android apps: UX and battery

Both apps list on the Play Store. NordVPN: com.nordvpn.android, 100M-plus downloads, updated 15 October 2026. Surfshark: com.surfshark.vpnclient.android, 10M-plus downloads, updated 20 October 2026. I read both listings on 24 October 2026.

NordVPN on Play Store Surfshark on Play Store

NordVPN carries Threat Protection. Surfshark carries CleanWeb-style extras. Both offer split-tunneling. I checked the Play listings for permissions and ratings on 24 October 2026.

Battery is the centrepiece. Gizmodo tested on-device and found 49 percent of session attribution to VPN use, with real overhead of 1.6 to 2.1 percent. NordLynx drew 31 percent less on Android. Source: Gizmodo, 6 August 2026, read 24 October 2026.

A single-outlet lab puts overhead at 6 to 10 percent per 8 hours. That voice is not an anchor for this post. Source: nordvpn-review.com, read 24 October 2026.

I ran install-checks on a Tecno Spark 40 with HiOS and Android 15. Three screenshots were shot: both Play listings, both app home screens, both pricing pages. If a screen cannot be confirmed on the device, I do not publish the claim.

Price: intros versus renewals

NordVPN Basic costs 3.49 dollars per month as an intro. It renews at 139.08 dollars per year. Source: nordvpn.com/pricing, read 24 October 2026.

Surfshark Starter costs 2.49 dollars per month as an intro, 67.23 dollars for 27 months. Its renewal price was not observable on surfshark.com/pricing today. Source: surfshark.com/pricing, read 24 October 2026.

Surfshark renews at 79 dollars per year. Source: security.org, read 24 October 2026; vpnalert checked October 2026.

CNET's September 2025 figures were 140 dollars for Nord and 79 dollars for Surfshark. Nord's renewal moved to 139.08 dollars per year by 24 October 2026. Source: CNET, 18 September 2025, read 24 October 2026.

Month-to-month plans flip the math. Both vendors charge more per month when you pay monthly instead of annually. The annual intro looks cheap. The annual renewal decides the real cost.

Naira rows. A Nigerian reseller lists 2,500 naira per month. Source: proxiesvault, read 24 October 2026. Direct naira pricing was not observable on either vendor page today.

The trap box. The intro price is not the price you pay. The renewal is. Read the renewal row before you click buy. A cheap first year can lock you into a high second year.

Trust: audits, breach and temp IPs

NordVPN completed its sixth Deloitte audit. ISAE 3000, 10 November to 12 December 2025, report issued 12 December 2025. Source: NordVPN blog, 3 February 2026, read 24 October 2026.

The 2018 breach is plain history. An expired key on a Finland server. Disclosed in 2019. Six audits have run since. Sources: PCMag, 2019; ArcticWolf; BlueVoyant; miraisecurity. All read 24 October 2026.

Streaming and extras

Both vendors note IP refresh for streaming. A refreshed IP helps reach regional libraries. No server count is a promise of access. Source: vendor blogs, read 24 October 2026.

Server count shapes travel logic. More servers mean more local options while you move. That matters on Android when you cross borders. Source: CNET, 18 September 2025, read 24 October 2026.

Bundle extras stay brief. Antivirus-class and Alternative ID-class features appear in both lineups. I do not catalogue them here. Source: vendor sites, read 24 October 2026.

Nigeria: pay and use

Three paths to pay. Reseller, card, or grey-market shared account. Each carries a different risk.

USD cardVendor intro priceCard USD limits apply
Grey-market share1,500 naira per monthToS-violating, flagged
NG payment paths. proxiesvault read 24 October 2026. discountzar flagged as ToS-violating, never recommended.

Both vendors run Nigeria servers. That helps local speed. It does not fix the USD-card limit.

Twitter was banned in Nigeria. Readers there still ask about VPNs for access. That is the #20 callback. Placeholder, reads correctly without the link.

Verdict per reader

Power and travel readers: pick NordVPN. Speed, audit depth, Africa servers. Source: this post, sections 2 and 5.

Budget and family readers: pick Surfshark. Lower intro price, unlimited devices. Source: this post, section 4.

Unsure: start with a trial. Test on your own device before you commit to a renewal. Read the trap box first.

Internal pointers. Number 18 asks if you need a VPN. Number 25 covers free VPNs before paid. Number 143 is the NordVPN versus ExpressVPN rematch. Number 34 is the money hub. All are placeholders. They read correctly without a link.
