Samsung high contrast theme: the quick summary
- It is a downloadable theme, not a switch. It puts light text on a dark background, and it lives at Settings > Accessibility > Vision enhancements > High contrast theme.
- The row above it is a different control. Display mode offers Default, High contrast or Large display for the whole screen at once.
- The themes come from Galaxy Themes. Samsung says various high contrast themes are available on Galaxy Themes, and the row is where you download them.
- Older phones may use the old label. Look for Visibility enhancements if Vision enhancements is missing.
- It is not on tablets and not in Quick Settings. Samsung's own page says the theme option is not available on tablets.
- No separate app is needed. To undo it, turn the same setting off. Samsung documents no other reset.
What the Samsung high contrast theme does
Samsung's High contrast theme puts light text on a dark background. It is a theme you download, not a switch that flips the screen at once. The current path is Settings > Accessibility > Vision enhancements > High contrast theme. Samsung's accessibility page prints that path in one line, and I read it on 4 November 2026.
I test on a Tecno Spark 40, so I cannot show you a Galaxy screen. Every Samsung step comes from the company's pages. Samsung's Vision enhancements support page is dated 7 August 2026. The accessibility page is dated 22 May 2026. Both were read on 4 November 2026.
Samsung's own wording is "Download and use themes that feature light colors on dark backgrounds". The company adds that the themes are "much easier on the eyes". It is not a colour filter or a screen mode.
You do not need a separate accessibility app. The feature sits inside the Settings app. The download route is Galaxy Themes, not the Play Store. A Play Store listing named High Contrast Themes returned a 404 when I checked on 4 November 2026.
Why readers turn it on
The theme "helps reduce eye fatigue" and is "especially helpful when using your phone in a dark environment or for extended periods of time".
The feature was built for readers with reduced vision. Samsung's newsroom said in 2017 that the theme "was designed to help users with reduced vision capabilities read text more clearly". That article is dated 13 October 2017, and I read it on 4 November 2026.
A dark background is not a style choice for every reader. Samsung explained that people with reduced vision tend to hold the phone close, and a white background would be too bright. The RNIB's guide on colour and contrast, which is about design in general, makes the same point. It says people with certain eye conditions, especially those that cause problems with glare, often prefer light text on a dark background. I read that guide on 4 November 2026.
Samsung also said the theme was not only for readers with restricted vision. Its 2017 article said "all user types are downloading it for their smartphones". The article added that people with no restricted vision were downloading it too. A reader with tired eyes should not feel like an intruder in this menu.
Samsung gives you two high contrast options
Open Vision enhancements and you meet two routes to high contrast. Display mode sits one line above High contrast theme. A reader in a hurry can tap the wrong one and believe the job is done.
Display mode is a setting with three choices: "Default, High contrast, or Large display". Samsung says Display mode applies the contrast or the larger content for you. You do not need to turn on High contrast fonts, High contrast keyboard and Screen zoom one by one. Samsung says Display mode works from One UI 4.0 and above. I read both Samsung pages on 4 November 2026.
High contrast theme is the other row. It is a list of themes you download, and each theme uses light text on a dark background. Display mode is not its parent, and the theme is not a step inside Display mode. The two rows are neighbours.
Android Police published a Samsung walkthrough in November 2023, tested on a Galaxy S23 running One UI 5.1. Its Samsung step reads, "Under Display mode, tap High contrast, then select Apply". That step stops there and never reaches the theme download. I read that page on 4 November 2026.
| Row | What it is | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Display mode | A setting with three choices | The whole screen at once, with more contrast or larger content |
| High contrast theme | A list of themes you download | The theme you use, with light text on a dark background |
Turn on the high contrast theme: the steps
Start in Settings, not in the Display menu. The confirmed path is Settings > Accessibility > Vision enhancements > High contrast theme.
The menu label can differ. The support page carries "Visibility" in its title, while its own steps say Vision enhancements. The 2023 walkthrough uses Visibility enhancements throughout. Expect either label, and do not assume your phone is broken if the second word differs.
The steps on a current Samsung phone:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility.
- Tap Vision enhancements. On an older phone, look for Visibility enhancements.
- Tap High contrast theme.
- Download a theme from the list. Samsung's wording is "Download and use themes".
Samsung warns that screens and settings vary by carrier, software version and model. Your model may not carry it. Do not start in Display mode, because that row changes the screen at once.
Where the themes come from
Samsung says "Various high-contrast themes are available on Galaxy Themes".
Galaxy Themes is Samsung's decorative content service. Samsung's Galaxy Themes guide says you can apply a design downloaded from Galaxy Themes or Galaxy Store. The guide says the design covers wallpapers, icons, and call and message interfaces. I read that guide on 4 November 2026, and it is dated 10 October 2022.
Long press the home screen, tap Themes, select an item, then Download and Apply. That is the store, not the theme screen. The high contrast page does not say the theme changes icons.
The theme is not new. Samsung's newsroom said in 2017 that the first High contrast theme launched with the Galaxy S8. The same article said it had been downloaded a million times. A second version, Sky Black, followed. I read that article on 4 November 2026, and it is dated 13 October 2017.
The Samsung pages give no count of the themes available today, so this post gives none.
The three rows sitting next to it
Many readers who open Vision enhancements do not need the theme. Three rows in the same list solve narrower problems, and each one is easier to undo.
The High contrast fonts row adds an outline to the letters. Samsung's line is "Tap to add an outline to all fonts so that they stand out against the screen". That changes the text, not the background.
High contrast keyboard changes the keys. Samsung says it changes the keyboard style with different colour palettes. The rest of the screen stays as it was.
The Highlight buttons row adds colour to buttons. Samsung says this makes them easier to see and select. Use it when buttons disappear into the background.
Two more rows are worth knowing. Color inversion flips the colours of menus and fonts. Font size and style let you bold the text. Those rows sit on the same support page. If the letters are thin, start with High contrast fonts.
What the high contrast theme does not do
The support page carries a direct note: "This option is not available on tablets". A Galaxy tablet will not show the same row.
The theme row is not a Quick Settings shortcut. Samsung's shortcut list names High contrast fonts, Color inversion, Color filter and Color adjustment. The theme is not on that list.
Android Police adds a limit that Samsung's pages do not. It says "Not all apps support high-contrast mode". The same page calls high-contrast mode experimental and still being developed. I read it on 4 November 2026.
Samsung's high contrast pages do not say the theme changes app icons, notification colours or third-party apps. I will not promise any of that.
A theme cannot repair a screen. If your panel draws lines, that is usually hardware, and my guide to horizontal lines on a phone screen starts with a screenshot test. If a white spot stays in one place, that is a pixel or backlight fault, and my white spot guide covers the colour test.
If your phone is not a Galaxy
Stock Android has no high contrast theme. It has separate display options, and Google documents each one.
Open Settings, then Accessibility, then Display size and text. Turn on Bold text. Google's text and display settings page says "You can use bold font to improve visibility". The same page warns that "Some apps won't use this setting". I read it on 4 November 2026.
The text contrast option depends on your Android version. Google says "To use outline text, your device must run Android 16 and up". For Android 15 and below, the same job is called high-contrast text. Both live on the Display size and text screen.
Google's accessibility overview lists its contrast and colour options as Color correction, Color inversion, Dark theme and Outline text. A downloadable high contrast theme is not on that list. So do not hunt for a theme toggle on a Pixel. I read that list on 4 November 2026.
Color inversion is the closest single switch to the theme's look. Google says it "reverses the color on the screen, and applies to everything including media". Photos and videos will look wrong, because their colours are reversed too.
On Tecno, Infinix and itel
Tecno, Infinix and itel publish no official accessibility path that I could find. That is a plain limit, not a hidden setting.
Tecno's support page mentions downloads, Facebook support and its community. It says nothing about accessibility, contrast, bold text or font size. Infinix's support address redirects to its homepage, which carries no accessibility path. The itel support address lands on a domain-for-sale page with no support content. I checked all three on 4 November 2026.
Use Google's stock Android reference as your starting point. Open Settings, then Accessibility, then look for Display size and text or Color and motion. Your phone maker may rename a row or move it. Search the Settings app for "contrast" or "text" if the path does not match.
I will not print an exact Tecno, Infinix or itel path, because no official page carries one. A guessed path is worse than a search box.
Questions readers ask
How do I turn on high contrast on my Samsung?
Open Settings, tap Accessibility, tap Vision enhancements, then tap High contrast theme. Download a theme from the list and use it. If you only want the quick switch, use Display mode and pick High contrast.
How do I remove high contrast mode?
Turn the same setting off. If you used Display mode, set it back to Default. Samsung documents no separate reset, so do not look for one.
What does the High contrast theme actually change?
It changes the theme to one with light text on a dark background. Samsung says that makes the screen easier on the eyes. Its current page does not list every screen the theme touches.
Is it different from the high contrast display mode?
Yes. Display mode is the row above the theme, and it changes the whole screen at once. It offers Default, High contrast or Large display. The theme is a download you use. They are neighbours in the same menu, not parent and child.
What to do next
Start with the row that matches your problem. For a quick contrast change across the screen, use Display mode. For a theme you download and keep, use High contrast theme.
Install no separate app. Turn the same setting off when you want the old look back. If the problem is not contrast at all, the wider fix order lives in my Android problems hub.
